About the Client
As COVID became the spanner to the plan of an already booming apartment rental industry in the USA, the self-guided property tour concept remained among the audience’s top trends. The client believes that self-guided tours can take the experience of potential property buyers or renters to a whole new level, even better than virtual tours.
The expert web app development team at Bytes Technolab helped our esteemed USA-based friend to reshape his idea into a beautiful reality called Pineapple.
Project Objectives
The core objective was to build a web portal for the agents and visitors separately. The idea is to foster self-guided apartment tours where visitors can view properties, book slots through a web app, and view bin maps to visit on their own.
The potential tenant will be able to receive instructions to get the apartment key. At the end of the tour, the potential tenant will return the key to the locker for the next viewer to use.
The Challenge
The apartment rental market has continued to adjust to Covid-19 impacts. Property managers in the USA are in search of technology to help bridge labor gaps and meet consumer demands. There is a hope that a tech solution will bring greater flexibility and convenience to the apartment search process.
The client has invented a device (Kiosk) to reduce the dependency on agents for end-users visiting a unit. But there was a challenge in the utilization of this device to make it feasible with the digital solution we were meant to develop. Interesting, isn’t it?
The Solution
So to execute the client idea, our web developers created two different portals: one for admin (Admin Portal) and another for end-users (Visitor Portal).
Admin portal for property agents/managers was created to handle units and kiosks association. The agent specifies the locker number on a specific Kiosk of the building in which he/she will place the key of that unit while creating it. A lot of features like appointment history, upcoming appointments for respective units, etc. were added as per the customer’s requirement.
The visitor portal is for end-users to book self-guided tours with functionalities like unit appointment booking, Stripe integration for user verification, email notifications to admin, SMS to visitors with a unique Kiosk code to retrieve the key from the locker, etc.
Highlights
- User Verification: A multi-level screening process through Stripe integration ensures that every potential renter is verified and genuine.
- Scheduling: The leasing schedule and apartment availability are completely customizable. The leasing team and property management software are notified when a tour is scheduled.
- Navigation: Web-based navigation (no apps to download!) gives potential renters turn-by-turn directions that seamlessly guide them through the amenities and to the apartment.
- Twilio: Twilio integration was done to help visitors ask instant queries to the agents to boost the reliability of the Pineapple.
- Key Tracking: The location of the key and its status are updated in the system.

Results
With a close collaboration with the client, React.js, Node.js, and Next.js developers made it live within the given timeframe. After a couple of months of maintenance & support service, the client’s feedback felt like music to our ears.
Pineapple is experiencing a regular growth of around 30% in agent registration every month and traffic on it has increased by 400% compared to the first month after making it live. We are still offering maintenance & support and recommending innovative features for the upcoming version.
